My Most Recent Visitors, Em & Twan

My college roommate (Em) and high school buddy (Anthony or Twan) came to stay with me this past weekend. The weather was finally perfect in the good old concrete jungle I live in. The temperature was in the mid 80's, the sun was out, Subways weren't scorching hot and zero rain fell. We had been planning this trip for months and it's hard to believe it came and went so fast. I'm still tired from the late nights spent touring the city so I've decided to just list a few of our highlights below. Playing tour guide for the weekend wasn't too bad... I even managed to experience a few new things with them!

And for any of you who know Em and I, you know there has to be at least one blonde moment along the way. So here it goes! We had purchased our tickets to go to the top of the Empire State building (something I hadn't done yet) and it was our turn to go through security. Em breezed on through with no problems. However, I did not. After three attempts and stripping me of all my jewelry and my belt Em decided she'd offer her 2 cents and help security. "Abby, I bet it's the water bottle in your hands." After her remark I think the security guard realized that with both our brains combined we'd still be unable to plot anything horrific and let me through despite the alarm still sounding. As we were walking away he crossed his arms and looked to Em and said, "Ma,am, this is a metal detector." We both had tears in our eyes from laughing so hard.

MY OH MY the list could go on. Anyways, it's time for bed because on Friday I get my next round of company!! It just happens to be my little sister Jenna who I have only seen once since Christmas. Hope NYC is ready for what's headed its way.

My August Update

Hi, everyone! I'm still without Internet and going crazy... which is why I've been MIA. Since my post about Target a lot has happened.

Mom visited New York the weekend of her 50th birthday. It was a perfect mix of loving the city and the beauty it has to offer. We went to a Yankee's game Friday night. My wish finally came true (my 1st rain delay in the stadium) so that I could spend some extra time exploring (and maybe drinking the beer and eating pretzels). I was happy to be wearing La Base Pro under my makeup because I was soaked and yet my makeup stayed in place. Kaitlyn, if you're reading, I would highly recommend you and your friends wear this under your makeup for your friends wedding. Mom and I also made it to Serendipity for dessert and Stone St. for my favorite pizza. I was lucky enough to have her around to help me shop for a dress for the Eat, Pray, Love screening I attended last week. We explored the dress floors at SAKS Fifth Avenue, it was by far one of my favorite memories from living here so far. If you ask mom what her favorite moment of her trip was, she'd probably tell you meeting the Lancome PR team. She was given a sneak peek into the "beauty closet" and went home with a few of Lancome goodies. Her favorite Lancome product is Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate and mine is Genifique Cream Serum.It layers well under makeup! We also made it to Rock of Ages on Broadway.

I've had a really busy last week. As you probably know, Julia Roberts is now a Lancome ambassadress and is the star of Eat, Pray, Love. Lancome held a private screening for makeup artists. The interns were a huge help preparing for the event, see picture above.

Last night I attended the premeire of Nany McPhee Returns starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson. I have to say it was the most surreal moment sitting in my seat at the movie theater and knowing the stars of the film were only two rows behind me. Lancome donated product for the goody bags and I was lucky enough to attend.

And to my cousin Ben, there is no way you are 9 months old today!! Stop growing, please. I need to get home and see you!!

My Visit to the First Manhattan Target Store

Being a loyal Target fan from the Midwest I have been lost without my frequent shopping visits. In fact, when I look back on my internship last year in New York, I went the entire time without stepping foot in a Target. So when I heard rumors a few weeks ago that a new Target store was to open in Manhattan, I went through the roof. It was over mom's visit to the city that I realized all the ads for the new store opening. They covered the entire length of Subway cars, splashed billboards in Times Square and made the front cover of daily New York papers. Last Thursday, I was walking down Bleecker Street when I noticed a tote from the new Target. It was love at first sight.

I made it my mission on Saturday to check out the new location. I shopped like I had never stepped foot in one. I was able to find a couple summer dresses, casual tanks and tees. I think the thing I was most excited about was the grocery section. I don't remember the last time I saw a box of cereal for less than $5.99... let me repeat, $5.99 for one box! Let's just say I stocked up on my Honey Nut Cheerios and granola bars, what a delicious price it was.

Perhaps the only dangerous part about Target being in Manhattan is how simple it was to get there. I hopped on the 6 train and got off in East Harlem where a Target shuttle bus dropped me off at the front door and took me back to the train. Way too convenient! Anyways, tonight's blog is about simple pleasures. In college I can remember weeks where we'd go to Target several times for cheap food and clothes, not anymore.

I'll make sure to post pics from mom's visit soon. We were blasted by thunderstorms at the game Friday night and listened to great music at Rock of Ages on Sunday night. She was also treated to Serendipity for dessert which always tastes amazing!

Happy 50th Birthday, Mom!

Guess who turned 50 today? That's right, my mom!! She has joined several friends at this beautiful age. The fun started yesterday when her morning "workout crews" surprised her with a large selection of birds (no, not real ones). Mom HATES birds. To poke a little more fun, last night at golf they presented her with a custom piece of fashion... a t-shirt covered in feathers. With all pranks aside, she told me last night she had a really good time. So first off, thank you to all of her friends for taking care of her birthday festivities back home.

More importantly, I get to extend the celebration with her starting tomorrow. Mom is flying to New York City for a weekend of fun, shopping, great food and hopefully a Broadway show. I have tickets for an event Friday night, but I'm afraid she'll read this post tonight and the surprise will be ruined. We're also hoping to hit up a few flea markets. I think we're both after vintage jewelry!

I just have to add, I have one of the coolest mom's ever. I can only hope that I look half as good or act half as cool as she does at 50. Here's to 50 more amazing and blessed years, mom!

I promise to put up pictues and keep you posted on our finds and fun this weekend.

I Know You Love Her Makeup Tutorials

Lancome wants your beauty opinion! This week Lancome video makeup artist Michelle Phan made her first trip to Paris. Michelle's fans have been able to follow her adventures via Facebook for the past couple of days. Among places she's been able to gather inspiration from for her next video include: The Tresor Bridge, shopping in St. Germain, Rodin Museum, Eiffel Tower and The Louvre.

Michelle also offered traveling advice on Facebook. When taking long flights it's essential to keep your skin hydrated. She recommended two Lancome favorites of mine to keep your skin healthy, Eau Fraiche Douceur Cleansing Water and Genifique Cream Serum. I have to have Genifique Cream Serum on my face before I apply any makeup.

The Start to My Summer Goes Something Like This

Hi everyone, I finally moved!! Which is why I haven't been on here for quite a while. We do not have Internet yet, and in some respect it has been kind of nice. I thought I'd give you a quick update before I leave the office.

My new place (95 Wall St.) has everything I need to be comfortable and successful AND MORE! I've posted a picture above of the kitchen. Let's be real, I'm not much of a cook. But the chandelier is gorgeous and makes me feel like I no longer live in a cramped apartment in NYC.

I was walking down Wall St. the other night to get home and noticed red carpet and a large crowd in front of Cipriani. Naturally, the tourist inside of me decided to stop and check it out. A fundraiser was being held and among guests I caught a glimpse of were JLO and Marc Anthony (I will put pictures up soon). I also snapped a quick shot of a guy I thought looked like Bernie Williams. Well, I realized later it was him. So much for getting my baseball (that's been in my purse & unsigned for more than a year now) signed. I'm pretty sure my Dad has lost all faith in getting an autograph from me...

I've also been able to get my beads back out and start designing some jewelry. From the necklaces pictured above, the one that has my favorite color in it (turqouise) was designed by Dad. He continues to WOW ME WITH HIS DESIGNS!! The brown necklace is a piece I made for my old roommate, Em. Stay tuned, because I'm working on some great pieces for Summer.

Speaking of Summer, if you're reading this and you don't live in NYC...don't be jealous. The Subways seem to be extra crowded now that it's super hot out. I also feel like some people have mistakenly forgotten to put deodorant on that day!!

Lastly, I have to give Iowa State a shout out today. An adviser from Iowa State visited and I learned that not only do we have roughly 30 students doing internships in New York, but some of the companies they are working for include: Ralph Lauren, L'Oreal, US Weekly and InStyle magazine. These are just to name a few, trust me...only a few. Go Cyclones! I also got a copy of the latest TREND issue and it is full of amazing fashion & beauty...congrats, TREND on a great issue!

My Crew Back Home

I just finished Skyping with my parents and cousin Austin. Today is his 10th birthday, Happy Birthday Austin!! All I have to say is time is going way too fast. And I'm extremely thankful for the technology we have available to us. How else would my sister have sent the adorable picture of Justin (the one w/chocolate cake all over his face above) on his 5th birthday, June 1? Happy Birthday, Justin!! And Happy Belated Birthday to Aunt Krisiti on June 7th!!

I'm thankful for such an amazing family back home. I miss you all terribly. I was suppose to be moving to my new place today, but now I'm told tomorrow. Anyways, thank you family & friends back home for all the support. A few have even offered to fly out here to help move my bed across Wall St. I'm truly blessed.

The cute little one in the green polo, plaid pants and sweet sandals, that's my little guy Benjamin. When I left he was only a month old and tiny. Now he's almost 7 months and beginning to move around and mess with mom's home decor.

Miss Olivia, I saw pictures from your Utah trip with your mom. It looks like you are having an amazing time. Call me again soon, you're the only one I can have "girl talk" with!

Last but not least, doesn't Jenna look fab in her picture from Austria? Sounds like she had such an amazing time she almost didn't return. Will another Mollenhauer leave the state of Iowa, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

And Grandpa O., you are an amazing man and I'm praying for you. Get well soon.

At Work in New York

I have said this many times I know, but working at Lancome is never dull. This afternoon, spokesmodel Arlenis Sosa stopped by for a quick visit. Her mother and aunt came as well. She was looking fabulous, like always. Who knew that a baggy pair of jeans, classy blazer and black top could look so chic?! And the heels she had on, I wish I would have asked where she bought them!

Arlenis became a part of the Lancome family in 2008. She has also appeared in magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Teen Vogue and made People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful List. Of course, these are just to name a few. Arlenis has worked for some of the most highly known designers in the world. Fashion shows play a huge role in her career. She participated in the 2008 Victoria's Secret Show and has been in ads for David Yurman (still saving to buy a bracelet from this designer), Topshop and Gap.

Despite a quick rise to fame, Arlenis has a beautiful heart. When she arrived at the office she had a smile on her face and brought a fruit "pizza" for everyone to share. Before leaving she grabbed a couple of her favorite Juicy Tubes to throw in her purse and made sure the girls had a photo opportunity with her. We both love the shade Spring Fling!!

Eau Fraiche Douceur, Refreshing!

My beauty regimen was introduced to Eau Fraiche Douceur a little over a year ago. And it has never been the same! I feel so refreshed after using this product it's unbelievable. I always start by removing my makeup with BiFacil (only the best makeup remover on the market). Immediately following I dab a cotton pad with a few pumps of Eau Fraiche Douceur and wipe my face clean.

I would also recommend throwing a bottle of this product in your beach bag. Yesterday, I went to the beach with Maddy and was feeling really gritty when I got home. I was thinking it would have been nice to have this cleansing water along to wipe all the sunscreen and oil off my face before I had to sit on the train for 45 minutes feeling gross! PRODUCT BONUS, there is no need to rinse after!

Lastly, for those evenings you fall asleep before getting to wash your face or even take your shoes off (which I've done a few times this past week) it's nice to wake up in the morning and wipe off all the impurities before you shower or put on your makeup.

Challenges Mean One Thing, Strength

This past week has been extremely stressful. I've spent hours searching for apartments, toured some that might have come straight out of a scene from a horror film and put my $75 "holding fee" on a couple of places. I put quotes around "holding fee" because I'm not quite sure I trust the whole situation. But, signing a lease in New York City is what I would imagine it's like buying a home, well, back home. I'm also wondering how the hell am I going to move on my own? I don't have a car, any family remotely close, no burly boyfriend to carry my bed, etc. I'll be sure to tell you when I sign my papers and post pictures of me dragging my bed across Wall St. Ha Ha

I'm also a little nervous about my baby sis. See, today she left for Austria. I'm super excited for her, maybe a little jealous and wish I would have done this in college too! I made sure to tell her plenty of times to be safe. I have sent her two emails already!! I forgot she can't call so I have to say thank goodness for Facebook. (I can't believe I'm thanking something that has become my No. 1 procrastination device!) I made sure to ask her what she included in her "beauty bag." Be sure to check back and I'll keep you posted. Let's see if she took the advice her big sis gave her, pack a few key items and you'll be set. And as I was going through some of my favorite items in the Lancôme beauty closet one day, I noticed that several items are small enough to be a carry-on item!

I guess after writing this post it has me coming back to the "beauty" of one thing, friendship. And the strength friendship provides. Reason one, my old roommate Em called after work. Even though I was two weeks late in getting her gift in the mail, she absolutely loved it. I made her a necklace and earrings to go with a dress we both bought. I was in New York and she was in Iowa, neither of us had a clue. Reason two, my friend Jen has listened to me bitch and whine, debate and cry over what's my next step. And she's still answering my calls. Reason three, my mom and her group of friends like to spoil their children in nurturing ways. They gather monthly to make homemade cards. She sent one a little while ago that I read every morning before I leave for work. It says...

Reason four, my mom (and our family) has a dear friend who is struggling with a parent in hospice. I was on the phone with my dad tonight sharing a few times I remember being around her. She is a great lady and I can't imagine what my mom's friend is feeling at the moment. Mom and another friend from the great "mother's group" went to visit their friends mom tonight. Before they left they reminded the mother they'd take care of her daughter. I guess it's true what they say, the beauty of a few great friends is more than words can explain.

So, I know it's only Monday. Some of us might have already experienced a long week. But try to remember that things could be worse. And maybe try reaching out to an old friend. Friendship is beauty, embrace it.

P.S. To all my girlfriends who remember our middle school years, I was in the supermarket last night and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" came on. I don't think I need to say anymore.

Since We Last Talked...

Hi, all! Wow!! I can't believe it's been a few weeks since I've blogged. After today's post, I'm sure you'll understand why. Between events for work, designing jewelry, apartment searching and going "back to school" I've hardly had time to sit back and relax.

First, we've had a couple events at Lancôme recently. We visited with editors from respected beauty and fashion publications in the magazine industry. This event was held at Jerome Dreyfuss in SoHo. (Click on the link to see pictures of the studio and the amazing handbags) The weather was perfect, the sun was out and I was able to take some time during my day to explore all SoHo has to offer. I had lunch alone on a park bench along the cobble-stone streets, and it was nice. As soon as I can tell you about Lancôme goodies we discussed, I'll let you know. What I can say is this, if you like Lancôme's Tresor you'll "be in love" with the aroma of what's next.

Yesterday, Lancôme hosted an event for bloggers and vloggers at The Lancôme Boutique on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. Legendary makeup artist Sandy Linter was on-site offering makeup tips and answering all your makeup question needs! It was a lovely afternoon and there were plenty of Magnolia cupakes to go around. Plus, everyone who attended the event was matched for their personal shade of Lancome's new Fresh Wear Foundation. I can't get enough of this product. I'll be sure to share more details about the event and Fresh Wear later.

I have started designing jewelry again. My dad has made too many great pieces lately so I guess you could say I felt intimidated and needed to step-up my game. I'll be sure to show you my first "collection" once I'm finished. I get so lost in the bead stores that hours will pass and I don't even notice.

And, I went back to school? That's right. It's been a really tough and stressful past month. Iowa State decided to call and tell me after what I like to call "my first graduation" in December that I was 1.5 credits short. I was ordered to take another two credits and had to write a 20-30 page research paper. There is one lesson I learned from this experience that I'd like to share with everyone. Document everything!! I wish I had.

Lastly, I have to move. I learned that while I decided to visit home for Alumni Weekend my room was not unoccupied while I was away. A couple items have since gone missing. And there's way too many bodies in one tiny area for any privacy whatsoever. So the search is on! I'll keep you posted. I'd love for visitors this Summer.

Old Friends Are Like Vintage Jewelry

I recently read an article about vintage jewelry and it's popularity. I promise to talk more about this, soon! For now, I'd like to share more photos and moments from my trip home for my five year high school reunion. I was definitely grateful for my Lancome Hypnose Waterproof Mascara this weekend.

I met a guy today from upstate New York. The usual response is "Wow, that must have been so hard to leave your family and friends back home!" Of course I say yes. And then I usually reply with a huge shocker, "I'm from a town of 4,000 people and there were maybe 120 in my graduating class." Only difference this time, I was the one in shock. He is also from a small town and graduated with roughly 80 people. It was so refreshing talking to someone who understood my urgency to make it home this past weekend.

I can remember so many nights just laughing, drinking, eating, playing cards, etc. in someones kitchen like the picture above. And the picture with the beautiful blonde, that's B-Lo. I'm A-Lo. These nicknames stemmed from one of the best years growing up - senior year in high school.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, friends are like vintage jewelry. You might not wear/talk to them every day, but they're an important accessory to always treasure.

And the cute little pup is my dog Sadie, I miss her a lot!

Donna Karen New York YANKEES

This is how my Monday started. I dodged a taxi in front of 10 Hanover. Heard "this express train is making all local stops today," after I had already been on for 15 minutes and was now stuck for an extra 20! Oh yeah and I had an allergic reaction to my ear infection med's that the doctor swore "aren't in the same family as Biaxin". Or how about the Progresso chicken noodle soup that is now covering my laptop keyboard, what a start to my week. Anyways, a dose of New York Yankees and designer Donna Karen turned my mood around.

The WWD landed in my mailbox today (like it does every morning) and one article caught my eye. And the picture of a certain Yankee did too. Friday night, I was at Adrienne's PizzaBar getting my local favorite ZZZA for the weekend when I noticed the game was on. After paying the bill I went outside to find it pouring down rain. But this rain didn't keep a certain New York City designer inside, Donna Karen attended Friday's game against Texas.

According to WWD Monday, Donna Karen (DKNY) recently teamed up with the New York Yankees for a long-term, multifaceted sponsorship deal. I'm trying to get more details because this sounds extra "sporty" to me!

Karen is pictured above (courtesy of WWD.com) in today's issue of WWD with Yankees manager Joe Girardi. An interesting story about Joe Girardi, I once stayed at the same hotel as him and didn't realize who it was until I got home. I think dad made me starve that week for not coming home w/an autograph!

I recently discovered the ultimate Puma sneaker. Ever since I can remember I've enjoyed searching for the perfect trendy sneaker on the market. In fifth grade it was Airwalk in black and maroon, middle school it was the all white Adidas sneaker with your choice of color stripes and high school it was DC and Etnies "skater" shoes. I might have been one of the select few to go for the "skater" shoe but I find comfortable, flashy sneakers so much fun!

So you can imagine how I felt when I came across these Puma sneakers pictured above. I bought the purple pair a week ago and have worn them to work (only to get to and from work) almost every day. Last weekend I wore them to my "Alumni Basketball Games" back home. With a pair of jeans rolled at the bottom they are super cute. Which is why I went back to get another pair today. I wanted to get a second pair of purple ones so that I could have one pair to trash to and from work and one for "fun." But, they were out. So naturally I had to see if they had any other colors and....

I bought the silver and white and pink and brown pairs. The best part about these Puma sneakers, they were only $39. What a steal!

Where Have I Been?

Hi, all! I have been away for a while. I was back home in Iowa enjoying myself with family and friends. I have lots of beauty information to share but need to finish some unpacking first. For now, enjoy a few pictures from this past weekend. A popular color I saw women wearing this weekend, coral. It's that time to bring your wardrobe back to life!

Jen made me cupcakes and they were delicious! I enjoyed them a little more than the famous place down the street from work. And they were carefully decorated with my favorite colors. Thanks, Jen!

I LOVE BLING. Bling on my hands, bling around my neck, bling on my clothes, bling on my shoes...I love bling. On Saturday, I met a friend at Coffee Shop. After drinks, dinner and dessert I still wasn't ready to head back to the Financial District. Conveniently, Forever 21 is right next to the 4 and 5 train...my transportation home. So we decided that 15 minutes to scope out the jewelry selection would be agreeable.

Now, I have timeless pieces from Tiffany & Co. but cheap "costume" jewelry just can't be beat. And if you wear the appropriate amount of bling and don't overdo it, bling can complete an outfit. I have lots of bling, I design bling, but this ring caught my eye from a mile away (okay not really but you get what I'm saying). It has all my favorite colors - turquoise, silver and black!

The weather is getting nice and you might be feeling a little bit of the winter blues. I promise, if you get even one new accessory to complete a spring/summer look you'll feel great. My new ring was less than $5.00. Bling, bling fashion lovers!

Fashion Designers At Every Age

I like to think that being brought up in the Midwest has made me appreciate all types of fashion. I left for a date the other night and was told I was wearing a lot of color for living in New York City. Guess what I was wearing? Dark, skinny jeans from Guess, a coral button up with a blue sweater over top from Gap and gold accessories from Forever 21. I was in shock. Culture shock more like it. If I wore all black, every day, like most people do here in the city, I don't think I'd like the reaction I'd get back home.

So I was really excited when I saw designs from two students at Forest City Elementary. Kennedy Baker and Sabrina Massie sketched a few designs of their own and sent them to me in New York. Sabrina's "crazy dress" would make a statement here in New York City. It reminds me of a ruffled coral jacket I saw on Peter Som's runway in February. Kennedy's color palette resembles the rainbow of color I saw at Chris Benz. Kennedy must have known I love accessories because her "line" comes complete w/shoes and a purse!

And last but not least, the latest necklace designed by my dad arrived on Saturday. The weather is trying to warm up and I've seen more of the sun lately, so fashion should compliment this awakening. Like I mentioned in an earliest post, I love gold and copper tones, so I was especially thrilled to see this piece arrive. It's a copper chain with multi-colored beads falling gently. I love it!

Sabrina's work is the "crazy" and "big, big dress" and Kennedy's is the sketch with splashes of color.

More exciting fashion news (and I might get yelled at for sharing) my dad designed a young girl's prom jewelry last week. I'm told it matched her dress nicely and was fabulous! If you want unique jewelry for your next special occasion contact me and I'll design w/him!

If you are a fan of nail color check out Essie's "not your grandmother's" pastel shades for Spring. Some of the shades are similar to the color used in Kennedy's sketches. Eye, Eye, Eye My Favorite Eye Cream

Sorry I have been away for a week. There's so much to catch up on! Happy St. Patrick's Day from New York City. The barricades went up on Fifth Avenue last night to prepare for the parade today...and they needed them. New Yorkers and tourists lined the sidewalks of Fifth Ave. early this afternoon to watch the St. Paddy's Day parade.

Looking out the 32nd floor window of the L'Oreal headquarters (where I work) I could see a sea of green below. The festivities were in full-swing. You would not believe some of the green attire I saw today. The music was constant until 4p.m.

At lunch Nine Cakes of New York City was selling miniature cupcakes to celebrate the day. I chose the chocolate whiskey (pictured above). I joked with Brianna that for a $1 I got a little buzz over the lunch hour because the whiskey flavor was strong. It was not the best cupcake I've had yet in NYC. Yesterday, we had Sugar Sweet Sunshine to celebrate my boss' birthday and they were delicious!

I can't help but think that around this week last year I had friends visiting from back home. Tis the season for Spring Break and getting away for a week. And the weather was perfect for just that. You can see (in my picture above) I stepped out in my Zara dress and cardigan and was comfortable. It was hard to go back inside to work. I will not be drinking green beer tonight but to all those who do, please be careful.

Guess Who's Going to Austria & What 5 Staple Products Should You Take on Your Next Trip?!

Not me - but I wish. Jenna, my little sister, is going to study abroad. She just found out today, I made sure I was one of the first to find out. I'm so excited for her - talk about loving life and seeing all the beauty out there. I have typically been the one in the family to venture the unknown but this is one adventure I haven't taken - studying or traveling abroad. Mexico w/friends on Spring Break doesn't count (even though it was a blast).

I have one college regret - not studying abroad. I think it's silly not to when you can get credit for it! I'm especially excited for Jenna because our family background is rooted in Germany so she will be close. She will spend two weeks learning and exploring. I'll be honest - I'm super jealous. Jenna doesn't have all the details yet so I'll keep you posted. Sometimes in life you have to just go for the things you really want, even if you don't know all that it'll become.

And if you're anything like me when it comes to packing for a long vacation, you don't start packing early and you always pack way too much. Or you bring every pair of shoes you own when two or three will do. I have mastered my beauty bag though. And here's what I'd recommend if you HAVE TO PACK LIGHT...

Daily moisturizer w/SPF - especially if you'll be sightseeing all day long

I Got Threaded

I have always gone to Sue Byro at the Forestor Salon in Forest City, Iowa to get a waxing. She does a great job and has maintained an eyebrow shape I've liked for myself since High School. Unfortunately, I can't make it home once a month when my eyebrows turn unruly. So a friend of mine in NY told me about threading. I had heard of it before but was really scared. But, for a really low price of $6 I couldn't argue. So I went today and....

my eyebrows looked amazing in just minutes. I will admit mine were REALLY bad so it hurt a little. But now that I have a place in New York I can trust I should be able to maintain and it'll be less painful. The upper lip was a little more painful than the brow. Threading is good for people who have sensitive skin that wax might otherwise irritate.

Threading pulls hair from the root and is therefore less likely to grow back as quick. Doesn't that sound great?! Threading has been done for many years and is an art. I would make sure to find a professional before you try. And I did not want my eyebrows to disappear so I made sure to tell them I want the same shape just cleaned up!

Feel free to ask me any questions - I was really skeptical but am glad I did it!

2 Months Already?!

Sorry I have been away for a few days - I truly live in the "city that never sleeps." Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have a 8-5 job, go home, make supper and have the rest of the night to relax. Right now, that's not me. And I'm fine with it. Let's talk about loving what you do and making it a priority.

Recently, a lot of people have asked me why I chose public relations. I'm going to be real honest with you - I accidentally signed up for communications classes after I quit pursuing my dream to become an architect. Go ahead laugh, I think it's ridiculous too. I'm in beauty now!

So I thought I was signed up to take hotel, restaurant and event planning courses. I was wrong - I was in public relations classes and had no clue what "PR" was. And to be real honest, it took me a year to figure out exactly what "PR" was.

Working in public relations in the beauty and fashion industry, there is no "that can wait until tomorrow." Everything is important. "This magazine needs lipstick X, Y and Z in the next hour, make it happen!" Most days I will hear my stomach growl and think "Why am I hungry this early?" and realize quickly it's already two in the afternoon.

What I'm trying to say is - I have seen and heard many people talk about not liking their job. They seem to be stuck in a world where they think they can't find something better because there is no time, resources, etc. to make it happen. WRONG! The reason I have titled this blog entry "2 Months Already?" is because I just realized I have already been here for two months. Two months, I feel like I just got here. Besides missing people - I'm not homesick. And I don't have any regrets. I know I feel this way because I have found work I truly love doing.

I started reading The Secret this past weekend and found one entry that sparked my interest. Jack Canfield wrote "Most of us have never allowed ourselves to want what we truly want, because we can't see how it's going to manifest." He is right - many of us fear "going for the gold" because we don't know how we're going to get there.

So make your life happen! I am a firm believer in there are no limits - go for everything you want in life and more.

Tell me your goals. The first step is knowing what you want. What's something crazy you want to do before it's too late?!

Size 0 to 12 and Never Looked Better - Crystal Renn for Hungry

My mind is racing just thinking about the book I finished this afternoon! I don't even know where to begin. The book is Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition, and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves by Crystal Renn. Crystal went from a size 0 to 12 and her career has only just begun.

I borrowed this book from the office and wish it was my own copy. I filled pages of my personal notebook with things I didn't want to forget. I wrote down page numbers to go back to and quotes I found truly inspiring. I don't have the space in one blog post to state all the personal notes I made.

Did you know that the average American is a size 12?! A size 12 - I thought we were made to believe size 12 was overweight? Crystal shares her story of being a model and now a plus-size model. What's the difference - I'll let the book explain. For now, understand that there is more to beauty and fashion than fitting into runway clothes. In fact, you will learn after reading this book that studies have been done to learn if women are more likely to buy clothing or beauty from a women closer to a size 10 - than let's say a size 4. You will be amazed at what you learn, trust me.

She has truly inspired me to think twice before I say I don't like the way I look. And I realize that there's a difference between wanting to be skinny and wanting to feel good in the body you have. Crystal talks about how difference in body types can be fabulous and diversity is important.

Crystal also touched on something my mom always preached - wear what you want but within your size. Nobody wants to feel like they can't breath in a pair of jeans straight out of the wash. Nobody wants to bring their arms to their chest and feel the seams rip across their back. Wear a size that flatters you. And everyones weight fluctuates - especially with age. So instead of staying in a size that doesn't fit and screams "look at me I had to lay on my bed and wrestle these pants to get them on" go up a size to look and feel great!

Crystal encourages women to stop postponing life due to their never ending struggle with body image. She reminds us that life is to0 short to hate yourself - so get out there and live it. Diets don't work - but health and body awareness do. And how many people actually have long term success from dieting? Trust me the numbers aren't that high!

One thing I have always reminded people - jewelry can completely change an outfit. If you're feeling frumpy one day play-up your jewelry and see if that helps!

The Beauty of Friendship

After my family, my friends are most important. My group of friends (girls and guys both) have been through a lot together. We have witnessed all of life's moments good and bad - birthday's, graduations, new careers, fights, milestones, break-ups, first car, death, graduation, getting into trouble, birth, engagements, weddings, moving to a new state, "first this" and "first that." I couldn't pick a better group of people than the ones I left in Iowa to share these memorable moments with.

Why talk about friendship today? Because I have been sick this week, worked a ton the last several weeks and have missed my friends like crazy! If you know even one thing about me, I have to spend as much time as I possibly can with my friends. Even if it means pulling an all-nighter, holding their hair back while they puke, threatening to kill the guy who broke her heart, or drinking b's with the boys - well you get the picture.

Today when I got home from work I had a package from my dear friend Jen. Inside I found some "favorites from home." Call me an emotional sap or maybe I was just really tired, but I read her card and cried. It feels amazing to know that my friends from back home have not forgotten the beauty behind a true friendship!

And.......the beauty of a true friendship is sharing each other's happiest moments in life! Yesterday my friend Nicole had her first baby and got engaged the moment she held her son for the first time. I'm happy for her and pray that her new little family is well.

For Beauty Inspiration Inside & Out - Read the March Issue of Latina Magaine

The Lancôme Boutique was not hush hush about their guest Monday night, Arlenis Sosa. Lancôme and Latina magazine gathered to celebrate the March cover featuring Arlenis Sosa! Sosa has recently walked the runways of Fashion Week Fall 2010 in NYC. She is the newest spokesmodel for jewelry designer David Yurman. I have had my eye on a couple pieces by Yurman for quite some time - for now they'll have to remain on the "wish list." Sosa has made quite an impact on the beauty and fashion industry. But one thing seems to be set in stone for Sosa - staying loyal to those that matter most in life, her family and friends.

I have had the privilege of working with Arlenis and visiting with her here and there. She is truly an inspiring young women. I can pick her out in almost any magazine by one characteristic - her thick, gorgeous eyebrows. Throughout high school and college I received compliments on my eyebrows (that are also black and thick but precise) and thought it was a little odd. It doesn't bother me one bit now!

Perhaps there's other reasons why Sosa makes me feel like I'm visiting with a friend from back home, her ability to relate to a small town. According to the article in Latina magazine, Sosa grew up in a town of 1,200 people. I grew up in a town of 4,000. We both understand what it's like to have close relationships with family and friends and the importance to keep those relationships strong. Sosa also Skype's with her family back home - which is something I try to do every Sunday!

Among guests at the Lancôme Boutique on the upper west side of Manhattan were Editor in Chief of Latina Mimi Valdes, Pop Singer Kat DeLuna and MTV host Julissa Bermudez (pictured above w/Sosa). Makeup Artist' Sandy Linter and Scott Barnes were there - of course both looked amazing as well.

Celebrate Arlenis Sosa!

Last year while interning for Lancôme I had the opportunity to work on a how-to-video shoot with Lancôme's spokesmodel Arlenis Sosa. She was an instant delight to work with. Recently, she was featured in Harper's Bazaar magazine and looked fabulous! When it was time for us to pack up and go home after the shoot, she asked for my name and wanted to become friends on Facebook. She has been in the office a couple times since and has remembered my name each time! Arlenis is truly a genuine person.

Which is why I'm so excited for tomorrow evening! Lancôme is throwing a party to celebrate Arlenis Sosa being on the front cover of Latina Magazine this March. I have seen a copy and trust me she looks absolutely stunning. The event will be held at the Lancôme Boutique (Columbus Ave @69th ST) tomorrow night - I will definitely be back tomorrow with pictures to share.

One Fine Saturday

I had one of the most delightful Saturday's yet in "the city" today. I met my friend Maddy at Cafeteria for lunch - Cafeteria is actually the first place I ever went for lunch last time I was in NYC. I got there famous mac 'n cheese - it is to die for! And it reminds me of Bishop's back home! There were two women seated next to us - an older woman in her 70's I'd guess and her daughter who I would say is in her 50's. They were such fun - I realized right away they were Cafeteria "regulars." There server Sarah (who was extremely full of life) had given them each a special gift. Each time they peeled away more of the wrapping ribbon a new gift would fall in their lap. One of the gifts was a "fortune teller fish." Each of them tried it and couldn't seem to get it to work. I had been visiting with them and thought I'd give the little fish a try. And....

Instantly it curled it's head and tail up! According to the "fortune teller fish" I am passionate and in love. It was quite funny actually because as the older woman was unwrapping hers I asked her "Do you have something in there that will find me Mr. Right" and they both giggled at me. I'm not sure what to think of my "fortune" just yet - but I'm excited to see!

The rest of the story gets funnier - Maddy put that little fish in the palm of her hand and it went crazy. The woman in her 50's said "You are X Rated girl" and the older woman said "You are hot stuff." They weren't sure how to read Maddy's "fortune." I just had to laugh - they were such pleasant women and it felt good to be around people that felt like home.

The most interesting part of this story - I told them I was from Iowa and they said "You know your waitress is from Iowa too." My jaw hit the table. I love finding out there are more people from the Midwest in New York. So thanks to the luxury of having a BlackBerry we were Facebook friends within five minutes and planned to meet up sometime in the future! I had hot chocolate for dessert and my new friend had placed a chocolate "I" on top for IOWA!

I hope I can run into these older women at Cafeteria again sometime. After paying there bill they were getting ready to leave and the younger of the two leaned over and said "You girls speak well for Iowa." I felt proud and was excited that other people enjoy the culture in NYC as much as I do!

Chris Benz for Chris & Tell & Lancôme at SAKS

My first fashion show ever was Chris Benz. It was a year ago at Fashion Week Fall 2009. I immediately fell in love with all the colors, texture, patterns and fascination he had in his designs. I was excited to find out Lancôme and Chris Benz teamed up to create one of the most sought after lipsticks in recent lipstick history - Chris & Tell! The color is fantastic, and trust me when I say anybody can wear it.

Designer Chris Benz and Makeup Artist Daniel Martin along with Lancôme gave beauty and lipstick fanatics one more chance to get this highly sought after Chris & Tell color. By the time the event was over the additional Chris & Tell lipsticks were sold out! Am I surprised - not one bit. They sold out online within hours and have recently been selling on Ebay for $80. Legendary makeup artist to the celebs Sandy Linter also stopped by SAKS 5th Avenue - it is always a pleasure to visit with her.

Happy 8th Birthday Olivia!

Today was my cousin Olivia's 8th birthday! She is such a little diva - and has a big heart! She has a love for animals and a great passion for life at such a young age. My younger sister and I love to "play makeup" with her. We like to give my uncle a hard time because we tend to make her look older for the day - it's so fun though!

I called her on my way to the Subway tonight and wished her a happy birthday. I love how honest kids are and clueless in an innocent way. She told me what she did for her birthday and watching Black Beauty was a top priority. I made the comment that I hadn't seen that movie in years and this is what she told me "Well I will let you borrow mine!" How sweet of her - yet she knows I'm in an entirely different state! And doesn't realize the effort it would take to "borrow" her copy of Black Beauty.

I remember what it was like to be eight - I didn't have a care in the world. My biggest concern in life was whether or not Mom would let Kelli stay overnight both Friday and Saturday - or if I could stay at her place one night and hers at mine - you get the idea!

Anyways - I guess what I'm trying to say is don't forget the little things in life that make you happy. Take time each day for yourself and your family. Remind those you love that they are special to you. It's okay to act like a kid sometimes - it might trigger fond memories from your past.

Happy Birthday Olivia - I miss you! Hope you enjoy your gift I sent!

"Fashion for Haiti" starts today - February 16th!

Beyonce has turned the "heat" up a notch - her career is at an all-time high! In New York City's Union Square on February 2nd in the old Tiffany's building she had a launch party for her new fragrance Beyonce Heat. Among celebrity guests were husband Jay-Z, Michelle Williams, Usher and her younger sister Solange (who was DJ for the night).

I stumbled across the event while reading another blog the day before. I decided that after work I would stop by - I mean why not Union Square is on my way home? While waiting for Beyonce to arrive - or so we thought she still had to arrive - I saw Michelle Williams and was able to take pictures of the building amazingly lit with bright red and green lights. Even from the ground level I could see the chandelier inside - which was absolutely breathtaking!

It seems like recently Beyonce has done a lot in the spotlight. Which didn't surprise me when I heard that she has teamed up with the Fashion Industry to become the official face of the t-shirts to help raise funds for Haiti. The earthquake in Haiti only lasted a few seconds but cut short the lives of too many civilians. Starting today, February 16th for $25 you can have the t-shirt Beyonce is pictured in above. All proceeds go to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Victoria Beckham was seen wearing this fun t-shirt under a black blazer - I just so happen to have a new black blazer from Zara (an impulse purchase but glad I did) that I will wear because I'm planning on purchasing one of these t-shirts for myself!

As promised here is a sneak peek from behind the scenes at the Chris Benz Fall 2010 Collection Presentation. Lancôme teamed up with Makeup Artist Daniel Martin to create another amazing look at the show today. For complexion Daniel chose Photogenic Lumessence liquid foundation- which happens to be a favorite of mine! I wore it in Bisque 4 to the show today! The look was on the edge of "gothic chic." Blush Subtil in Cappucine was gently applied to the cheeks for a subtle glow. Lancôme's new Hypnose Drama Mascara was used to coat the lashes. The lips were rich in Color Design Matte Lipstick in Bronze Show (also a new Lancôme item) and topped off with a thin coat of Juicy Tubes lipgloss in Hallucination. By the way - Juicy Tubes are celebrating their 10th Birthday this year! The nails were a new shade for Lancôme called sweet nude. I'm not a huge nailcolor person but I really loved this color!

If I had to describe the feeling backstage I'd say it was "organized chaos." As new models arrived we had to direct them to get either their hair, makeup or nails done. And there was no pattern once you started - so making sure all of the models had the entire transformation complete before showtime was a little hectic! The Lancôme PR team had everyone ready by showtime - with even a few minutes to spare for photos!

Among the amazing talent backstage was Alex Sanchez and Michelle Phan for Lancôme. Celebrity guest Kelly Osbourne had time for a picture with designer Chris Benz.

One Person Who has Never Forgotten Me on Valentine's Day

There has been one man in my life who has never forgotten a single Valentine's Day. Each February 14th that comes along he has promptly had a single red rose waiting at home for me. When I moved out of the house for college he found a way to get them to my dorm. And for the last two years he has wrapped them gently and placed them in a box along with other goodies and sent to New York.

This man used to play just about every sport in the book - well almost. If you ask him he'll say all the "manly ones." He played football in college and still thinks he's a legend there - haha. Recently this man has helped with a hobby of mine - designing jewelry. If I stumble along something I really want but wish I could make it myself he finds a way to make it happen. I think it's safe to say he's a little addicted himself (and he is going to kill me for spilling all this info!).

Pictured above are the roses he shipped to New York and one of the two necklaces he designed for me and sent for Valentine's Day. They are gorgeous and I have received many compliments!

I think it's safe to say that all men do have a "softer" side. Football buff and baseball whiz now designing jewelry - I'd say that's pretty neat! Of course he hasn't given up on the "tougher" side - just last night we discussed the latest Topps cards that I'm sent to look for in New York. And one thing you might not guess about me - I always have a blank regulation size baseball and permanent marker in my handbag JUST IN CASE I RUN INTO A NEW YORK YANKEE BASEBALL PLAYER!

If you haven't guessed this important man in my life yet - it's my dad. He is truly one of the most amazing people in my life. And as I celebrate this Valentine's Day single for the first time in years, I hope that someday I can meet a guy just like my dad.

My First Show - Peter Som Fall Collection 2010

My boss is amazing. She was unable to attend this show and gave me her ticket, cool right?! So, I pulled up to the MAC & Milk Studios on 14th Street and realized this was my first time I was going to a fashion show in New York City alone. I was a little nervous but at this point in my life, I refuse to let any opportunity slip through my fingers!

I arrived early and while I waited I had time to see lots of amazing people arrive to watch the show. Of course everyone had fashion on their mind - and body. One woman had on the largest, chunkiest, most amazing necklace I have ever seen. The next time I have a "free" weekend I'm going to try and design one for myself - it was so cool!

One color I saw replicated throughout this show a lot - turquoise - how did he know it was my favorite color?! There was also lots of purple and decor on the shoulders - shoes that came up mid-calf of every color. The makeup was a pale face with a dark lipstick. The show was very neat!

Look What YouTube has Done!

Where were you when you first logged onto the Internet? I'm assuming it was not high-speed or on your Blackberry. I remember my family's first computer - it was a Gateway desktop that we actually used out of my bedroom. My first e-mail account was with Hotmail. And I can still remember the sound of dial-up connections. But those days are gone - and have been replaced with website's like YouTube.

Michelle Phan is a YouTube sensation. Millions have watched her makeup how-to-videos. Millions have learned how to create the perfect "smoky eye" and the best look for a first date - how to wear makeup like Lady Gaga and perfect the quality of their skin from Phan.

So I'm not surprised that a luxury beauty brand like Lancome has teamed up with Phan to become the first company to have a video makeup artist. Phan films all her YouTube videos in the comfort of her own home and has zero special equipment to get the job done! Amazing!

I had the privilege of meeting Phan today - she is as pleasant as she seems on YouTube. It is so refreshing that a reputable company like Lancome is giving an average person like myself such an amazing opportunity. Congrats Lancome and Michelle!

Trendy Fashion Finds for Less

I spend my days now on 5th Avenue. That's where "work" is located. And trust me it's a blast - but not always kind to my wallet. Especially when my route back to the Subway consists of some of my favorite stores along the way. I've had to find ways to get great looks - for less - and I'm happy to share!

I like to frequent H & M. They have everything from casual to "fashion business professional" and I can usually find what I'm looking for. Two weeks ago when I stopped in I felt like I was back in grade school. There were Mickey Mouse over-sized sweatshirts, every color of leggings one could imagine, and flat fabric white shoes. Remember when everyone had a pair of plain white shoes? Usually Keds or something similar! Some were even shiny. And you would have tall colored socks to go with your top - well guess what that's all coming back!

Now I would suggest not picking up a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt and wearing it to your next dinner party - but have a little fun w/your casual wear every now and then. At low prices why not have a little fun.

Tonight I stopped in H & M to find a gift for my cousin's birthday and of course had to browse the jewelry and accessories section. Naturally, I was drawn to the turquoise and gold earrings (pictured above). Turquoise is my all-time favorite color and I'm really into gold accessories right now. Forget about the old rule "you can't wear silver and gold at the same time!" I love mixing both and making my outfit over the top! The best part about my jewelry finds tonight - they were practically a steal!

Fashion Week is Approaching in "High Style"

As I walked to the Post Office at Rockefeller Center this afternoon I couldn't help but hear loud whistles across the street. One, I'm not surprised there was a loud noise coming from across the street on 5th Avenue. Two, I was not surprised to learn that it was a group of protesters - all busy blowing on their whistles and waving their signs high in the air. I never got close enough to see what they were protesting, but one clip from a movie came to mind. Remember in Sex and the City the Movie when Samantha was leaving a fashion show in NYC and an animal rights protester threw red juice on her beautiful white fur coat - yeah that image came to mind. And for a minute I had to remind myself I was in New York City and it was days away from Fashion Week 2010!

Which leads me to my next point - I might as well have titled this post in "high demand." For all those fashion and beauty lovers who aren't with me here in New York City to witness the craziness - Fashion Week 2010 starts February 11th. For me this has meant many hours of preparation in the beauty world that now consumes my life - but I can't complain one bit! Even if I'd be lucky enough to score a ticket to see first-hand a much loved designer's Fall preview I'd still have one thing in mind - the makeup and "beauty" behind the clothes.

What does this mean for you? I mean let's be real right - even if you happen to score a ticket to a great show previewing the latest trends - can you afford to go out and buy it? First, I'm going to do my best to bring you the best fashion news I can. Secondly, I want to help you find the places that have great fashion at a price everyone can afford. Most importantly, if you can't afford the clothes - there's always great makeup to make an outfit complete.

In my mind the makeup is just as important at these shows as the clothes and models who wear them - so I promise to keep you posted on all the fun things I discover in the next week to come!

Need Help Applying Makeup?

To say I love makeup is an understatement. I love everything about it. The colors, the texture, the intensity it can create. Makeup can make or break an outfit - dress up or dress down an outfit. Makeup makes people come alive on the "big screen." One can never have enough makeup - unless there's more than enough on your face.

When I first expressed an interest in makeup Mom always told me to make it look natural. That's just what I did - and spiced it up a bit. I had my standard "natural" look with neutral colors and fun glosses, but that wasn't the case every day. I began buying colors that matched my clothes and jewelry.

One thing that always gets to me though is when women think they need a lot of makeup to make a dramatic look. Not true gals - less can mean more. It's all in the application and what look you're trying to create.

I suggest watching makeup how-to-videos online. Lots of young and older women have started creating how-to's of their favorite looks. This is super helpful for those of us NOT YET BRAVE ENOUGH to try new makeup trends. So I am going to try and post a few of my favorite how-to guru's on my blog. I encourage you - yes you - to try and refresh your makeup routine. And don't tell me you don't need to wear makeup to work - everyone should feel like a GLAMAZON inside and out.

The "Beauty" in Giving

I was visiting with someone close to me the other day from back in Iowa. They had recently read an article that encouraged Americans to give three gifts to people at random before Valentine's Day. The catch - don't let that person know the gift was from you - let it remain anonymous. Personally, I love seeing the reaction on people's faces when they open a gift from me. There's something about seeing a smile stretch ear to ear when I've thought long and hard about what I wanted to give them. But maybe there's something more "beautiful" about giving when you can give and not worry about a thank you or "will they like what I bought?"

One of the most "beautiful" gifts I received in college was from a relative who re-gifted their own birthday money so I could buy groceries and a "little fun" for the next week. My goal this month is to pay-it-forward the same "beautiful"gift this relative gave me to someone I think who could use a little money for food and fun!

So before I turn the lights out tonight - I'm going to encourage all of you to find the "beauty" in giving. Maybe it's to a family or friend - or a donation to Haiti - size and amount doesn't matter it's the "beauty" behind giving that counts.
